Frankfurt the business core of Germany
We shall continue our virtual journey in Germany with the beautiful city Frankfurt the business core of Germany. Frankfurt is not the country’s largest city (it is actually the fifth in size) but its importance is given by the economical development and the fact that it is the financial capital of the country. Some also call it “Bankfurt” because of that. The Central European Bank headquarters is here and you probably know that Frankfurt is the biggest international airport in Germany.
The full name of the town is actually Frankfurt am Main (Frankfurt on Main) because of its location on both sides of the river Main, but only few Germans call it this way. The city, once called Franconofurt, with its ancient trade fairs was one of the most important cities during the Roman Empire. Today everybody considers Frankfurt the business core of Germany. Frankfurt relies proud on its three core pillars: finance, commerce and transportation.
The economic portrait
This is the city of banks or the so-called Mainhattan. The city is the financial centre as the Frankfurt Stock Exchange holds 85% of the country shares. Frankfurt has the second European stock exchange (after London). The European Central Bank and the national German bank were established here. Its concentration of multinational companies made a leading European city out of it.
As an occasional visitor you will find an open and hospitable atmosphere here in Frankfurt. The city has played for centuries the role of an international trading centre. Messe Frankfurt, or the Frankfurt Trade Fair, is one of the largest trade fairs in the world where buyers and sellers meet to conduct business through the year There is no wonder the city is such an important trade location. During the Middle Ages, here used to be the main trading route. It was the first city to acquire the privilege of holding trade fairs. The city has developed into a modern international trade fair ever since. Today, Internationale Autoaustellung is the biggest car exhibition in the world.
Transportation plays an important role here. Frankfurt’s airport is the biggest in Germany and one of the world’s busiest airports. The railway station is the biggest in Germany. Autobahnen, right next to Frankfurt, is the most important motorway junction in Germany. Because Frankfurt is Germany´s biggest transport hub for air, road and rail traffic, we can say that the city is in fact the gateway to the entire world or that all roads lead to Frankfurt.
