The Mittelrhein or the Middle Rhine Valley is the most picturesque section of the Rhine River. It runs between the cities of Bonn and Bingen and spans three German states: Hesse, Rhineland-Palatine and North Rhine-Westphalia. The section named the “Rhine Gorge” is also known as the “Romantic Rhine” and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

There are numerous notable cities along the Mittelrhein which are absolutely worth visiting. Besides, there are fantastic landscapes along this section of the Rhine, not to mention the castles, palaces and fortresses which can be seen in the area. Rhine Gorge

The romantic Rhine Gorge is the name for the upper section of the Mittelrhein. It lies between Koblenz and Bingen. The amazing UNESCO World Heritage Site has geological, cultural and historical importance. There are many castles, vineyards and picturesque settlement in the region which are very attractive for tourists. This section of the Middle Rhine Valley is truly a romantic destination. You shouldn’t miss the visit.

Schönburg

As one of the most famous castles of the Rhine Valley, Schönburg is one of the highlights of the Mittelrhein. Located above the beautiful medieval town of Oberwesel, the castle has a picturesque setting. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is very attractive for tourists, being quite well-preserved. Today a hotel and a restaurant function in the castle.

Poppelsdorfer Schloss

Located in the adjacent area of Bonn, the beautiful Poppelsdorfer Schloss is a remarkable Baroque building, being a important highlight of the Mittelrhein. There is a large garden surrounding the palace and a beautiful lake in front of it. In case you visit the city of Bonn, I recommend you not to miss this fantastic landmark either.

Marksburg

Marksburg is one of the fortresses located along the Mittelrhein. It is one of the main highlights of the Rhine Gorge. The fortress is famous for being the Mittelrhein’s only medieval castle that has never been destroyed. Built in 1117, the castle has a picturesque setting, overlooking the Rhine Gorge.

Bonn

The city of Bonn is one of the most beautiful and most visited cities of Germany. As a starting point for the Mittelrhein, Bonn is a must-see if your destination happens to be this area. There are innumerable fascinating sights in and around Bonn, including churches, castles, museums, residences and natural attractions. Bonn Minster, the Beethoven House, Godesburg Fortress are among the most visited sights of the city.
