Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen
The breathtaking gardens are some of the major landmarks of Hanover. The Herrenhausen Gardens include four gardens: the Great Garden, the Georgengarten, the Berggarten and the Welfengarten. These are fantastic tourist attractions of the city. The Great Gardens are perhaps the most beautiful of the four gardens, being considered one of Europe’s most spectacular Baroque formal gardens. The Berggarten used to be a simple vegetable garden until it was transformed into a gorgeous botanical garden. The Welfengarten and the Georgengarten are English gardens and serve as great recreation areas for local people.
The New Town Hall
It is housed in a fantastic eclectic building since 1913. The castle-like structure is of an outstanding beauty, being one of the major landmarks of Hanover. The almost 100 m tall dome of the building houses an observation platform. There is an elevator which takes the visitors up to the top of the dome so that everyone can access it easily. As for some of the major highlights of the New Town Hall, in the ground floor there are 4 city models which depict Hanover’s development. The Town Hall is open to the public. It can be visited from Monday to Friday, from 8:00 to 18:30, on weekends from 10:00 until 18:00. The elevator operates between March and November. (November 2012)
One of the most fantastic zoos of Europe, Hanover Zoo is a major tourist attraction of the city. It contains numerous theme areas, such as the Jungle-Palace, the Gorilla-Mountain, the Zambezi, Australia and so on. There are also “swimming areas” with different seabirds and wooded areas, a jungle house, a tropical house and so on. The zoo attracts thousands or even millions of visitors each year. The zoo is open from the 28th of October until the 28th of February from 10:00 to 16:00 and from the 1st of March until the 27th of October from 9:00 to 18:00. (November 2012)
The Lower Saxony State Museum
The largest museum of the city, the Lower Saxony State Museum is a fantastic attraction of the city. It is situated opposite the New Town Hall. It includes the fantastic State Gallery which houses outstanding exhibitions of sculptures and paintings dating from the Middle Ages. Besides, there are gorgeous departments of natural history, archaeology and ethnology. The museum can be visited from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 until 17:00 and on Thursday until 19:00.
