Brandenburg is one of the several federal states of Germany. It is situated in the eastern part of the country and its capital city is Potsdam. The state surrounds, but doesn’t contain the German capital city, Berlin.

The Sanssouci Palace

As one of the most famous and most astonishing palaces in Europe, the Sanssouci Palace is an architectural jewel. The beautiful Rococo palace seems to be a rival of the French Palace of Versailles. The palaces in Potsdam and Berlin attract over two million people every year. Both the highly decorated interior of the palace and the park are very attractive. The Orenienburg Palace

The Oranienburg Palace is situated in the town of Oranienburg. It is considered the oldest Baroque palace in Brandenburg. This fascinating schloss was built in Dutch style. It houses a museum which contains mainly works by Dutch artists. Between April and October the museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 until 18:00 and from November to March it is open from Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 until 16:00. (January 2013)

Spreewald Biosphere Reserve

The Spreewald Biosphere Reserve was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. The landscape of the area was shaped during the ice age. It is very attractive for visitors. The reserve is inhabited. Besides fishery and forestry, tourism is a major source of income for the inhabitants. Pine forests, wetlands and alder forests are characteristics for the reserve, including about 18.000 species of plants and animals.
