The best-preserved historic towns in Saxony

With such important cities like Dresden, Leipzig, Zwickau and Chemnitz, the wonderful German state, Saxony is a great area to visit. The state is an important historic region of the country. Its capital, Dresden is a wonderful city, attracting numerous visitors each year. In one of my previous guides I have already presented you the best urban destinations of the state. Below I will present you the best-preserved historic towns in Saxony which include Freiberg, Meissen, Bautzen, Pirna and Görlitz. Visiting any of them will surely make your holiday unforgettable. I suggest you to visit as many as you can. You surely won’t regret it.  


One of the most beautiful historic towns of Saxony is Freiberg. It is known as a mining and university town. The historic centre of the town was inscribed on the list of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. The town is very attractive for visitors, especially the town centre. Other attractions of Freiberg are its annual events, including the Mining Town Festival, the Christmas Market and the Freiberg Art Award.

Another wonderful historic town of Saxony is Meissen. It is situated only about 25 km of Dresden. Located on the Elbe River, Meissen is famous for its porcelain and some wonderful landmarks, including the breathtaking Gothic Meissen Cathedral, the large Albrechtsburg Castle and the beautiful Meissen Frauenkirche. It is a beautiful city of which attractions are all worth visiting sights. You should make a visit, too.

Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful historic towns of Saxony is Bautzen. The town lies on a hill top. It has some wonderful historic attractions, including the Church of St. Michael, the Old Waterworks, the beautiful Town Hall, the unique Witch’s House and Ortenburg Castle. Besides, there are four museums in the town which are also worth visiting attractions.


Located near Dresden, the wonderful town of Pirna is a great place to visit. There are numerous beautiful historic buildings in Pirna which are very attractive for tourists. Not only these sights, but the nearby Sonnenstein Castle and Memorial, the Pirna Museum, the Botanical Collections of the town and other museums are also very attractive sights.

Considered the easternmost town of Germany, Görlitz is a beautiful community. Görlitz is a great place to visit. This wonderful historic town is very attractive for tourists. It has some excellent landmarks, including St. Peter and Paul Church, the Waidhaus, the Silesian Museum and numerous architectural jewels of Gothic, Baroque, Renaissance and other styles.
