The German mulled wine
Glühwein, the German mulled wine, is a traditional drink during winter, especially around Christmas or Halloween. Actually the Glühwein is the most popular winter drink in Germany. The wine is usually prepared from heated red wine with different spices, such as cinnamon, vanilla, cloves, star aniseed, citrus and sugar. Some recipes may add fruits to the mulled wine. A cup of mulled wine is the perfect treat for cold winter days. This wine can be found in every Christmas market in Germany, in the pubs or at home, using a simple family recipe. Whatever you chose, you should know that the German mulled wine is very appreciated during the holiday period by both locals and visitors.
Glühwein served at social events and Christmas Markets
This red wine is served with orange, a dash of cinnamon, cloves and sugar at many social events in Germany during the cold season. If you find yourself in one of the German pubs or you are attending one of the outdoor social events, you can always bundle up with your friends and catch up over a mug of mulled wine.
The seasonal German Christmas Markets are colourful and festive and, unlike the flea markets, the merchandise selection in the Christmas markets can be mixed. The mulled wine seems to make the Christmas markets more interesting and fun. Each time you participate to the Christmas markets in Germany, you will be tempted by the cinnamon-spiced wine. After a couple of hours wandering in the cold or while listening to one of the live concerts, warming up with a mug of mulled wine might be the best idea. The Glühwein must be consumed very slowly, so that the intense flavours can be savoured. You have to serve it while it’s hot, otherwise it will taste like sangria when it cools down. If you have never tried it before, it will be love „at first taste”. There are plenty of mulled wine flavours to choose from. If you prefer spices, try the classic version of Glühwein. In case you would like to have a fruity-flavoured drink, try the orange, apple or the blueberry version.
