What is Reeperbahn? Reeperbahn is a famous street in the St. Pauli district (red-light district) of Hamburg. Reeperbahn is a famous centre of Hamburg’s nightlife. In German Reeperbahn is also sometimes described as “die sündigste Meile” of Hamburg (“the most sinful mile”). If you visit Hamburg, you must make a walk along the famous street, because no visit to the city is complete without hitting the legendary nightlife site of Hamburg. About St. Pauli district
St. Pauli district is known as the red-light district of Hamburg. It is a popular area among tourists, being located on the right bank of the Elbe River. St. Pauli has a long tradition. There has been prostitution in St. Pauli for a long time. The main highlight of the district is the Reeperbahn. With dozens of visitors, the district is a world renowned place.
Highlights on Reeperbahn
With innumerable sex shops, sex museums, strip clubs, bars and clubs, Reeperbahn is the main nightlife scene of Hamburg. The main highlights of the street are the Große Freiheit, the Davidstraße, the Spielbundenplatz and the Herbertstraße. Herbertstraße, one of the side streets of Reeperbahn is considered to be the most notorious street, with prostitutes sitting in windows.
Reeperbahn and The Beatles
During the early years of the 1960’s the famous band, The Beatles played in several clubs around the Reeperbahn. Among these clubs were: Indra, the Star-Club, Top Ten and Kaiserkeller. They had not yet become world-famous at that time. In order to commemorate these times, a square was built at the cross of Reeperbahn and Große Freiheit, named Beatles-Platz.
The Reeperbahn doesn’t get crowded until evening hours. The best time to visit it is at around 20:00 or 21:00. On weekends the street gets extremely crowded. Due to high police presence, the Reeperbahn is safe.
